Purpose
In the dynamic world of leadership, let's dive into the core of our professional essence – purpose, the steady beat that propels our choices and our actions. Take a moment, let's delve into introspection. What drives you? What's the real tune behind your professional narrative? When I think and write about purpose, I feel connected into the world of music, so I hope you find the musical metaphors here helpful.
Purpose isn't some abstract concept; it's the concrete force that shapes our path. It's not about orchestrating a grand symphony; it's finding the practical harmony in what you do every day. Your purpose is the practical beat beneath your decisions and endeavours that drive those day-to-day rhythms – with intent. In my work as a CEO coach, I often find that the question a client poses is too big, too broad, and too deep to answer. So, here's a pragmatic challenge for you – don't overcomplicate it. Seek a purpose that resonates with the practical realities of your work.
Feel the energy, not from an ethereal source, but from the very real alignment of your purpose with your actions. It's about making purpose a down-to-earth guide that influences your decisions and moves you forward. This is your invitation to embrace a purpose that's not just a distant melody but an energising rhythm woven into the fabric of your daily professional life.
In the domain of leadership energy, purpose isn't a distant concept; it is the dynamic force that transforms intentions into impactful actions. Unlock the power of purpose, and in doing so, unleash the boundless energy needed to lead change authentically, passionately, and with unwavering intent. Feel the transformative energy radiating from a crystal-clear sense of purpose.
Growth is Typically Uncomfortable
In the relentless pursuit of change leadership, there's a gritty reality that we can't ignore – the necessity of uncomfortable growth. True leadership energy, the kind that sparks innovation and propels us forward, doesn't emerge from the cosy confines of our comfort zones. Challenges become catalysts for growth from adversity and discomfort.
Picture this as a challenge, not to merely acknowledge discomfort, but to actively seek it out. Perhaps you might ask yourself: In what areas of your professional and personal life are you too comfortable, too settled? Now, that's your invitation to lean into discomfort, for it's on the edge of the unknown that the magic of growth unfolds.
Being incredibly shy and lacking in gravitas early in my career, when the opportunity came to stand on a stage and speak to a large audience to launch a new product I was leading, I remember wanting to run as fast as I possibly could in the opposite direction. I couldn’t have been more self-conscious and not wanting to take centre stage. I remember thinking just how significant a moment this was for me to break through this confidence barrier and prove to myself that it wasn’t so bad. I did so and whilst it wasn’t easy nor perfect, I learnt a huge amount.
The experience taught me not to set my limits as low as I had and to trust in my ability far more than I had. This small example gave me the positive platform to trust in myself and my capability to grow, perform, and deliver. It formed the positive soundtrack that I played to myself when courageously committing and following through on what at the time felt like some rather bold choices in career and my life more broadly. I would never have competed in the Round the World Yacht Race or completed 5 marathons over 5 days for charity around the Alps, I’m sure, had I not taken this bold step all those years ago. As I reflect today on this, it has become natural for me to lean into discomfort in the pursuit of growth and doing the ‘right thing’.
Embracing uncomfortable growth is a gritty, roll-up-your-sleeves commitment to progress. So please challenge yourself to identify those discomfort zones – the untapped reservoirs of potential that hold the keys to your growth. It's not about revelling in discomfort for its own sake, but about recognizing it as the raw material for personal and professional growth and positive change.
So, here's the pragmatic truth: Leadership energy surges when we actively choose growth over comfort. It's not a theoretical exercise; it's a real-world commitment to stepping into the unknown, acknowledging the discomfort, and harnessing it as a dynamic force for change.
Resilience
In the realm of leading change, the path to progress is seldom a frictionless journey. Challenges are the very fabric of transformation so, instead of viewing them as roadblocks, let's redefine challenges as the stepping stones to profound and impactful change. Each obstacle encountered is an opportunity for resilience to take centre stage. Resilience isn't just about bouncing back; it's about springing forward with newfound strength. It's the alchemy that turns adversity into a catalyst for growth.
Within my current work portfolio, I coach many CEOs of ambitious mid-sized businesses. I sit alongside them, at times in sheer awe of their capacity to deal with challenges. I see their resilience strengthen, like a muscle, with each challenge they encounter. In truth they are truly inspiring in many ways, but in this context, for the way they embrace the discomfort, draw the insight and learnings from those challenges, turning them into positive strategic steps and utilise their resilience to lead in the most impactful and compelling way imaginable.
So, in the pragmatic pursuit of harnessing energy for change, resilience is your indispensable ally, turning trials into triumphs and challenges into the raw material for transformative leadership.
Let's not just weather the storms; let's thrive amidst them, resilient and ever ready for the winds of change.
